Common HVAC Repair Costs & How to Avoid Them

It may not seem like it at the moment, but Spring is here, and we will all be preparing for the warmer months to come. Spring is wonderfully mild and crisp in the NC mountains. However, it will soon give way to the scorching, humid Summer months that are hard on our home's air conditioning systems. Poorly maintained units are more likely to break in harsh conditions and incur higher unexpected repair costs.

Speaking of unexpected repair costs, do you know what common HVAC repairs cost? We looked at some national averages and spoke with a couple of local contractors to get the answer. Of course, the costs vary considerably by your location, unit size, brand, and several other factors. However, below is a rough ballpark of common repair costs: Blue Ridge Energy__Blog Graph.jpg

  • Capacitors $90-$400
  • Condenser Motor $100-$300
  • Circuit Boards $120 - $600
  • Programmable Thermostat $60 - $250
  • Furnace Flame Sensor $80 - $225
  • Blower Motors, Assembly $250 - $600
  • Contactor - $150 - $300
  • Defrost Controls $200 - $650
  • High Pressure Switch $90 - $250

You know the saying: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Well, good news! There are some easy things you can do to avoid or protect yourself from unexpected HVAC repairs.

  1. Change Your Filters.
Dirty filters put extra strain on your unit which leads to a variety of compounding problems throughout the system. Experts recommend changing your filters at least every 2-3 months. However, if you have pets or allergies, you may consider changing them monthly.

  2. Get on a Planned Maintenance Agreement with a local HVAC service company.
Seasonal maintenance by a trained professional not only helps prevent common repairs but it can also help you catch problems early on in the process. Planned maintenance can reduce the cost of ownership significantly and extend the life of your unit.

  3. HVAC System Protection Plan
Blue Ridge members have access to a low-cost protection plan called UtilityShield that covers all of the repairs listed above, and more. For $.75 per day, you can cover your HVAC system and water heater from common repairs not covered by homeowner's insurance.
